Every season can be allergy season, but there are a lot of ways you can ease your symptoms naturally. Besides smelling divine, did you know that essential oils can help? From Peppermint and Lavender to Lemon and Chamomile, check out the many ways essential oils can help you breathe and breeze through allergy season.
Peppermint
Its minty scent may be irresistible, but peppermint essential oil can do much more than smell good. An expectorant and relaxant with antispasmodic properties, peppermint essential oil can help ease your itchy throat, clear your sinuses, and minimize coughing. (1) Making it a powerful tool in providing relief for colds, asthma, and bronchitis as well as allergies. (2) Acting as both an anti-inflammatory and expectorant, it can help you cough up that phlegm and soothe your chest so you can breathe easy.
Use: Diffuse peppermint essential oil to relax muscles, soothe sinuses, and ease a scratchy throat. Alternatively, dilute peppermint essential oil in a carrier oil such as coconut or jojoba and massage onto the chest, back of the neck, and temples. To help with inflammation, add a drop or two mixed into a tea or smoothie and drink up. (3) Avoid using peppermint with children aged three and under as this essential oil is rich in menthol which can significantly slow breathing in young children. (4)
Lavender
Beloved for its ability to relieve stress, soothe skin irritations and ease tension, lavender essential oil deserves a prime spot in your homeopathic arsenal. A powerful anti-inflammatory and a natural antihistamine, lavender essential oil can reduce irritation and inflammation caused by an allergic reaction. Since stressing over your red runny nose, or any other pesky reaction can aggravate your symptoms it is an added benefit that lavender essential oil can help keep you calm and if used before bed promote a good night’s rest. (5)
Use: Add a drop of lavender essential oil with coconut or jojoba oil and apply directly to areas that have developed a rash or hives, and around the sinuses to ease inflammation. To promote sleep and combat stress, add lavender to your diffuser, and breathe deeply. (6) If using on children, ensure that the lavender essential oil does not have a high camphor content. Camphor can be dangerous for children, so use with caution and avoid using with children under six years of age. (4)
Lemon
Your first thought when you think “lemon essential oil” may be cleaning, and you wouldn’t be wrong. Lemon essential oil is a favorite for DIY home cleaners and air freshness, but its ability to clean can be applied to your body too. Lemon essential oil supports the immune system and lymphatic system, stimulating the body to flush built-up toxins that may be contributing to inflammation and an overactive immune system. It is also antibacterial, making it a crucial oil to have in your stash.
Use: Drink a glass of water with a few drops of lemon essential oil to support detoxification. (3) Diffuse to help kill any bacteria in the air. Alternatively, mix lemon essential oil with water and spray in the air, on hard surfaces and soft surfaces to eliminate any allergy triggers within the home. (1)
Chamomile
A cup of chamomile tea may be known as the sleepy time tea, but it can do so much more than that. Chamomile essential oil is known for its ability to soothe skin irritations including itchy skin, rashes, hives, and eczema that can often result from seasonal allergies. A fantastic anti-inflammatory, chamomile essential oil can calm the respiratory tract and relieve sinus headaches when inhaled (7). Who knew the intoxicating scent of chamomile could do all of that?
Use: Dilute a few drops of chamomile essential oil with a carrier oil such as jojoba or coconut oil and apply topically to any irritations as its anti-histamine effects will soothe the skin. Diffuse to induce a calm, relaxed state and ease respiratory symptoms such as sneezing or stuffy nose.
Before using any essential oils, do your research and ensure that the oils you are using are 100% therapeutic grade.
