Christina has been an outstanding support for the births of my two children. She has always been available and eager to offer expert professional advice, specifically on breastfeeding. However, she has also provided great input about infant sleeping and adjustment to Motherhood overall. What I appreciate most is her positive outlook and constant encouragement . I felt her sincere concern even though we mostly communicated via phone calls, texts, and email. With my first child I was so close to giving up on breastfeeding and I prayed for God to help me make it. She was an answered prayer! She has a true passion and gift for nutrition and all baby matters!

FAQs

How much does a lactation consultant cost in Charleston, SC?

Initial consultations are $250 (60-90 minutes) and follow-up visits are $175 (15-60 minutes). Many insurance plans cover these services—we’re in-network with Cigna, Tricare East, and work with The Lactation Network for major carriers. We also offer cost-effective packages that include multiple visits and 24/7 support for Charleston-area families.

Does insurance cover lactation consultations?

Yes! We’re in-network with Cigna (through Wildflower Health) and Tricare East. We also work with The Lactation Network, which covers 6+ visits for plans including Anthem BCBS, Blue Cross Blue Shield PPO, and United PPO. If you’re out-of-network, we provide superbills for possible reimbursement. Apply through The Lactation Network here.

When should I schedule a lactation consultation?

During pregnancy: To prepare and address concerns before birth

First 48-72 hours: For initial latch help and colostrum questions

First 2 weeks: When establishing supply or experiencing pain

Anytime: For supply issues, pumping challenges, returning to work, tongue tie concerns, weaning, or any feeding transition. Early support prevents many common challenges from becoming overwhelming.

What happens during a lactation consultation?

We’ll assess your feeding concerns, observe a feeding session, check latch and positioning, evaluate milk transfer, and create a personalized plan. Sessions cover everything from painful nursing and supply concerns to pump fitting, tongue tie assessment, and back-to-work strategies. You’ll leave with actionable steps and ongoing support.

Do you offer in-home or virtual lactation consultations in Charleston, SC?

Both! We provide in-home visits throughout Charleston, Mount Pleasant, Summerville, James Island, West Ashley, and the surrounding Lowcountry. Virtual consultations are also available for families anywhere in South Carolina and beyond—ideal for latch assessment, pumping support, and back-to-work planning.

Should I book a single visit or choose a package?

Packages offer better value and include 24/7 text/email support, which is invaluable when questions arise at 2am. They’re ideal if you’re pregnant and want prenatal preparation plus postpartum follow-up, or if you anticipate needing ongoing support for your Charleston-area birth. Single visits work well for specific concerns like pump fitting or quick troubleshooting.

What's the difference between an IBCLC and other lactation support?

An IBCLC (International Board Certified Lactation Consultant) has completed extensive clinical hours, health science education, and passed an international certification exam—the highest credential in lactation care. This advanced training allows us to address complex medical feeding issues, assess tongue ties, and bill insurance. Other certifications have less clinical training and cannot bill insurance.

Can you help with painful breastfeeding or low milk supply?

Absolutely. Painful nursing is never normal and usually indicates a latch issue, positioning problem, tongue/lip tie, or other correctable concern. For low supply, we’ll identify the root cause and create a personalized plan that may include feeding techniques, pumping strategies, and nutritional support. We serve families throughout the Charleston area with same-day and last-minute appointments when possible.
